La fibrosi cistica riduce le normali difese delle vie aeree, aumentandone l’acidità e di conseguenza rendendole più suscettibili alle infezioni batteriche. E’ quanto hanno scoperto i ricercatori dell’University of Iowa negli Usa, confrontando le vie aeree di maiali sani e ammalati di fibrosi cistica. Nei maiali ammalati vi era una minore capacità dell’organismo di uccidere i batteri nocivi.
La scoperta è stata pubblicata su Nature. “Le vie aeree sono rivestite da un sottile strato di liquido che contrasta l’azione batterica. Tuttavia, nei malati di fibrosi cistica vi è un aumento dell’acidità di questo liquido”, ha spiegato il ricercatore a capo dello studio, Alejandro Pezzulo.
“Questo rende più difficile eliminare i batteri. Abbiamo scelto i maiali per il nostro studio poichè a differenza dei topi i loro polmoni si ammalano in una maniera molto simile a quella degli esseri umani, il che significa che i risultati di questo studio possono essere molto probabilmente applicati alla nostra specie”, ha concluso Pezzulo.
