Contro la morte improvvisa degli atleti l’ecocardiogramma

L’ecocardiogramma dovrebbe essere incluso nello screening di routine per aiutare a identificare quegli atleti che hanno problemi cardiaci che potrebbero portare a morte improvvisa. Lo studio del Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center è stato presentato durante il meeting annuale della American Society of Echocardiography e suggerisce di aggiungere alle pratiche correnti, che includono esami come l’elettrocardiogramma e lo studio della storia familiare del soggetto, l’ecografia cardiaca.
“L’elettrocardiogramma è un buon tool ma non è abbastanza sensibile per cogliere i problemi che potrebbero indurre la morte improvvisa. L’ecocardiogramma, anche breve, porta invece informazioni utili sulla struttura del cuore e sulle cardiomiopatie, che sono principalmente responsabili delle morti improvvise negli atleti”, ha spiegato Michelle Grenier, a capo del gruppo di ricerca.
Gli scienziati hanno reclutato 85 giovani atleti sottoponendoli a un elettrocardiogramma, un ecocardiogramma di, mediamente, 9 minuti, e un questionario sulla loro salute. Il 12 per cento, 10 partecipanti, aveva un eco anomalo e necessitava di un ulteriore approfondimento. Tutti gli altri esami di questi dieci atleti, compreso l’elettrocardiogramma, davano invece un esito normale.
