I cambiamenti climatici e un eccessivo sfruttamento stanno causando una drastica riduzione del ‘Viagra himalayano’, un fungo selvatico tipico della catena rocciosa che separa Nepal e Tibet e ritenuto dotato di grandi proprietà afrodisiache. Lo yarchagumba, che cresce ad alta quota, può arrivare a costare 11.500 dollari a libbra e gli esperti locali lanciano l’allarme sulla sempre minore disponibilità del fungo, raccolto da migliaia di persone ogni estate, prima dei monsoni.
Secondo gli abitanti dei villaggi che basano la propria economia sullo yarchagumba, il fungo sarebbe addirittura a rischio estinzione a causa di un eccesso di raccolta, dal momento che le quantità prelevate durante questa stagione sono già significativamente inferiori alla media.
“Siamo tornati a casa con poco più di 10 pezzi in un mese – ha spiegato Nar Bahadur Bohara al Kathmandu Post -. Coloro che avevano raccolto tra i 150 e i 200 pezzi lo scorso anno potrebbero non superare i 30”. A parte qualche sporadica nevicata, nell’area in cui cresce il fungo non piove da due mesi e questi eventi meteorologici sono necessari per il suo prosperare. Allo stato attuale, i villaggi nepalesi sono ancora in grado di ricavare sostentamento dai raccolti, che lo scorso anno hanno raggiunto quota 80mila dollari, un numero significativo dal momento che la maggior parte degli abitanti
vive con meno di 100 dollari al mese.
