I ricercatori dell’Indiana University negli Stati Uniti hanno sviluppato un nuovo test genetico per prevedere il rischio di schizofrenia. Il test si basa su un’analisi di un set specifico di geni e genera un punteggio indicativo del livello di rischio.
“Per la prima volta possediamo una lista approfondita dei geni che sono implicati nella schizofrenia”, ha detto Alexander B. Niculescu, a capo dello studio pubblicato sulla rivista Molecular Psychiatry.
“Si tratta di varianti genetiche presenti in tutta la popolazione, ma che messe assieme si sommano e determinano un rischio maggiore. Questo non significa che un risultato positivo al test indica la certezza di sviluppare la schizofrenia, ma che il proprio cervello ha
un’attività neuronale differente, più suscettibile allo sviluppo della malattia”, ha precisato Niculescu.
Il prototipo del test è stato finora in grado di prevedere l’insorgenza della schizofrenia in due terzi dei casi.
